The Welsh assembly has voted (30th September) that with effect from September 2009 eligibility for free transport for primary school pupils will be extended to all those living more than 2 miles from school, rather than the current 3 miles for 8-11 year olds.

The Measure also includes a duty to promote access to Welsh language schools. The walking distance for secondary pupils remains 3 miles. However, there has been some concern that the proposals did not guarantee the right of transport to faith schools - leaving this to the discretion of individual authorities.
